#100 Semen Science

sperm_CU

Evolutionary biologist John Logsdon returns to explain the amazing diversity of sperm design, and its connection with mating behaviour. And Scientopia blogger Scicurious joins us to discuss some of our favorites from her Friday Weird Science archives. We’ll talk about everything from the antidepressant properties of semen, to smelly semen, to testicle receptacles, and so very much more.

  2. umm .. what’s with the censoring of words like ‘balls’ and ‘shit’ when such matters as sperm competition, large clitorises & non-monogamy are being discussed? Not to mention the titles of some other posts like ‘Do your balls hang low?’ …

How strangely coquettish and prudish a world we live in where we can still be bothered by hearing a word that we could just as easily read – who are we protecting?

  3. Dave – We make those choices because we’re not just a podcast. We’re rebroadcast on a number of radio stations, that all have different standards for what their audience finds objectionable. We erred on the side of obscuring the words that were less anatomical. I hope it didn’t ruin the experience for you.

  4. Believe me, once you receive one email from an extremely irate program manager, who reminds you that he, the person who chose to air your program, could be fired for our transgression, you really don’t want to receive another. :/
